THE COLLAPSE OF THREE-STOREY BUILDING AND FLOOD IN EKOSODIN COMMUNITY: SWUYN APPEALS FOR AID IN THE AFFECTED COMMUNITY
September 15th, 2024. Society for the Welfare of Unemployed Youths of Nigeria (SWUYN) Edo State Chapter.
We, Edo State Chapter, SWUYN are deeply concerned over the collapse of a three-storey building in the Ekosodin community in Benin City on September 14th, 2024, which has left some citizens homeless and affected by the resulting flood. We are also saddened by the loss of properties caused by this disaster.
The collapse of this building is a tragic reminder of the urgent need for action to address the impacts of climate change and natural disasters in our communities. We call on the Government, corporate organizations, and individuals to come together to provide support for those affected by this disaster and to work together to find long-term solutions to the problem of flooding and climate change in our community.
SWUYN urges the Government and relevant agencies to prioritize the provision of emergency assistance to those affected by the flood, including food, shelter, and medical care.
The floodwaters that have taken over the Ekosodin community have caused extensive damage to infrastructure and businesses in the area, and have left citizens without access to basic necessities like clean water, electricity, and sanitation. The situation is dire, and we fear that the health and safety of our community are at risk if we do not act quickly to address this crisis.
SWUYN also calls for a review of building standards and regulations in the area, and for the establishment of an early warning system for flooding and other natural disasters. This disaster has exposed the vulnerabilities of our community and highlighted the urgent need for investment in flood mitigation and climate change adaptation.
We pledge to work with the Government, corporate organizations, and individuals to develop and implement strategies for flood mitigation, climate change adaptation, and community resilience.
We also use this opportunity to call on all relevant stakeholders to come together and support the victims of this disaster, and to work together to develop and implement strategies to address the impacts of flooding and climate change on our community. The time for action is now. We must act quickly and decisively to protect the lives and livelihoods of our citizens, and to ensure that our community is resilient in the face of future disasters.
