Swuyn Demands Justice for Rahmon: Dispatch Rider’s Death Unacceptable

SWUYN DEMANDS JUSTICE FOR RAHMON: DISPATCH RIDER’S DEATH UNACCEPTABLE

The Society for the Welfare of Unemployed Youths of Nigeria (SWUYN) has received with deep pain and utmost displeasure the tragic killing of a young dispatch rider, Rahmon, reportedly at the hands of a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Shamsideen Adio, and his associates on Tapa Street, Lagos Island, as captured in a widely circulated video since Thursday, September 18, 2025.

From every indication, this barbaric and inhuman act is a direct assault not only on Rahmon’s right to life but also on the values of justice, human dignity, and the sanctity of human life in our society. To see a hardworking young man, who set out to earn a decent living, cut down in such a cruel and senseless manner is painful, unacceptable, and condemnable.

SWUYN strongly aligns with the call of the Lagos State House of Assembly, through Hon. Adewale Temitope Adedeji, OON, for the immediate and thorough prosecution of the culprits. It is our firm belief that no individual or group, no matter their affiliations, should be allowed to place themselves above the law.

We hereby demand:

1. Effective Prosecution – The Nigeria Police must ensure that Shamsideen Adio and his accomplices are prosecuted to the full extent of the law, with no room for compromise or cover-up.

2. Accountability within NURTW – The leadership of the Lagos State NURTW under Alhaji Adekunle Mustapha Seigo must urgently suspend the said Shamsideen and fully cooperate with law enforcement to ensure justice is served.

3. Youth Protection and Safety – Dispatch riders, transport workers, and all Nigerian youths striving for survival must be protected against intimidation, harassment, or violence in the course of their lawful duties.

4. Public Reassurance – Lagos State Government and security agencies must reassure citizens that such incidents will never be tolerated again by taking decisive steps to address lawlessness within transport unions.

This incident is another sad reminder of the growing threats faced by unemployed and struggling Nigerian youths who engage in menial and informal jobs to survive. Rahmon’s death must not be in vain. Justice must prevail to serve as a deterrent to others who trivialize human life.

We call on all well-meaning Nigerians to unite their voices against this barbarity. The life of every citizen matters, and no one has the right to cut it short.
