Empowerment is Not Handout Nor Charity, but Sustainable Path to Self-Sufficiency and Long-Term Success –  Comr. Preye Tambou’s Charge

14th May, 2025

Comr. Preye V. Tambou, National President of the Society for the Welfare of Unemployed Youths of Nigeria (SWUYN), has issued a charge to the public, emphasizing that true empowerment goes beyond temporary handouts. Speaking on the importance of sustainable solutions, Comr. Tambou stressed that empowerment should equip individuals with the tools, resources, and support needed to thrive and become self-sufficient.

“True empowerment is not just about giving; it’s about investing in the potential of others and helping them unlock their own power,” Comr. Tambou said. “We must move beyond temporary solutions and focus on providing education, training, mentorship, and access to resources that empower individuals to build sustainable futures for themselves and their communities.”

When asked by a public figure, “Who is responsible for the empowerment? Is empowerment a duty, responsibility or Charity or Social Service?” Comr. Preye V. Tambou, National President of the Society for the Welfare of Unemployed Youths of Nigeria (SWUYN), replied:

“Empowerment can be facilitated by various entities, including governments through policies and programs, organizations such as NGOs and private companies, and individuals like mentors and community leaders. Empowerment is a responsibility and a social service, not just charity. Governments and organizations have a duty to support citizens’ and stakeholders’ well-being. Empowerment initiatives should benefit marginalized or underprivileged groups, equipping them with skills and resources for long-term success.”

Comr. Tambou’s charge highlights the need for a shift in approach to empowerment, from dependency-creating handouts to sustainable solutions that foster self-sufficiency and independence. By investing in the potential of others, we can help individuals become established enough to empower others and create a positive impact in their communities.
